In 2020 New York, an immigrant from Belarus struggles to balance two failing relationships amidst the burgeoning coronavirus pandemic and political unrest in her home country
SYNOPSIS
An immigrant from Belarus, married an American man — a role that eventually allowed Jana to leave her birth country but left her with unresolved feelings of guilt and shame — 30something Jana now lives in New-York, dealing with multiple hardships in her personal life as well as the looming pandemic and political instability in her home country which threatens the life of her brother.
Jana faces several difficult obstacles throughout, such as her two failing relationships, one of which she depends on for the possibility of a Green Card, an unstable living situation, sexual harassment by a boyfriend, and the disappearance of her brother amid protests and political corruption in Belarus. The subtle anti-Russian sentiment and tie to protests for Ukraine in 2022 make the story particularly timely. The documentary footage from riots in Belarus and Zoom conversations with real people making this story even more vivid.

Independent filmmaking, over the last three decades, has become an important creative and fiscal alternative to big-budget, high-concept Hollywood films. The economics and streamlined creative process of low-budget independent filmmaking allow producers to freely develop innovative stories, nurture up-and-coming talent, and encourage new forms of storytelling. Low-budget films do not have to gross $ 100 million to be profitable; a domestic theatrical gross of several hundred thousand dollars is enough to stimulate profitable sales in home video, VOD, television, and foreign markets.
Furthermore, with Hollywood tentpoles becoming more derivative, name actors are hungry for sophisticated roles to play, and are often willing to reduce their fees to play them.
Film investments are best used for diversification, as with other alternative assets such as real estate, commodities, or investment-grade wine. Though returns vary from film to film, movie-going itself is impervious to fluctuations in the economic climate, as audiences continue to watch movies even in a down economy.
